Liverpool have announced a series of special tributes to Diogo Jota after the Portuguese forward’s tragic passing earlier this month.
Jota and his younger brother, André Silva, tragically lost their lives in a car accident in Zamora, northwestern Spain, after their vehicle suffered a tyre blowout during an overtaking maneuver.
The devastating incident occurred just weeks after Jota had married his childhood sweetheart, Rute Cardoso, with whom he shared three children.
The brothers’ funeral was held a few days later, with Liverpool manager Arne Slot and several of Jota’s teammates—who had recently celebrated Premier League success with him—in attendance to pay their respects.
In response, Liverpool retired Jota’s No.20 shirt across all levels of the club and has now announced more lasting tributes in his memory.
According to a statement on the club’s website, the vast collection of fan tributes—including scarves, shirts, and artwork—has been carefully gathered, stored, and preserved. The floral items will be composted and used in gardens at Anfield, the AXA Training Centre, and Melwood.
Other memorabilia will be repurposed into a memorial sculpture that will be installed outside Anfield in the future.
Liverpool Unveil Lasting Tributes to Diogo Jota
As part of their pre-season tour in Asia, Liverpool will wear shirts featuring a special patch that reads ‘Diogo J. 20’, in a touching tribute to the late forward.
In addition, when the club’s new Adidas kits are launched on August 1, a ‘Forever 20’ emblem will be embedded into all player shirts and stadium jackets for the entire 2025–26 season.
Supporters who wish to honor Jota by printing his name on their shirts will still be able to do so. All proceeds from these purchases will go directly to the LFC Foundation, which plans to launch a grassroots football initiative in Jota’s name.
Floral tributes will be placed on the pitch at each of Liverpool’s pre-season matches, and a minute’s silence will be held before their Premier League opener against Bournemouth on Friday, August 15.
Liverpool have expressed their gratitude to fans for their ongoing support, adding that “further details will be shared with supporters in due course.”
The Reds are set for a busy pre-season schedule, beginning with a clash against AC Milan in Hong Kong. They’ll then face Yokohama F. Marinos at the Nissan Stadium in Japan, followed by a double-header against Athletic Club on August 4.
These matches will serve as preparation ahead of their Community Shield showdown with Crystal Palace at Wembley, scheduled for August 10.
