Viktor Gyokeres has spoken for the first time since being confirmed as an Arsenal player.
After weeks of speculation, it was officially announced on Saturday evening that Viktor Gyökeres has completed a move from Sporting CP to Arsenal.
The Swedish striker had been linked with several top clubs over the summer—Manchester United, Juventus, Chelsea, and Liverpool among them—but ultimately chose to join the Gunners.
According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Arsenal secured the 27-year-old’s signature for €63.5 million, with an additional €10 million in potential add-ons.
Gyökeres will don the iconic number 14 shirt at Arsenal, once famously worn by club legend Thierry Henry.
In the club’s official statement, it was confirmed that the forward will now link up with Mikel Arteta’s squad for their pre-season tour in Asia.
During his first interview as an Arsenal player, Gyökeres shared his reasons for choosing the North London club as the next step in his career.
Speaking about his decision to join Arsenal, Viktor Gyökeres said:
“I felt this was the right club for me. From my conversations with Mikel [Arteta] and Andrea [likely Andrea Oliveros from Arsenal’s recruitment team], and seeing how the team has played in recent years, it just felt like the perfect fit. When I faced Arsenal last season, it was clear how strong and tough they were to play against.”
He continued:
“That played a big role in my decision, along with the club’s rich history and huge fanbase. Even before I arrived, the support from the fans has been incredible. That’s what football is about. I can’t wait to see them in the stands.”
Gyökeres also spoke about his ambitions:
“I always want to score goals. Wearing this kit, playing in front of our fans, and scoring for Arsenal—that’s something I’m really looking forward to. It will be an amazing feeling.”
Reflecting on his journey, he added:
“My career in England began a while ago, and I feel I’ve come a long way since then. Now, I want to truly prove myself and perform with this team.”
Before his move to Arsenal, Gyökeres gained experience in English football with clubs like Brighton & Hove Albion, Swansea City, and Coventry City.
