Fabrizio Romano has dropped a fresh update on the future of Newcastle star Alexander Isak as the saga surrounding the Swede’s potential move to Liverpool continues.
Alexander Isak returned to Newcastle’s training ground earlier this week after missing the club’s pre-season tour of Asia, but he has yet to rejoin first-team training.
Liverpool recently had a £110 million bid rejected for the 25-year-old—well below Newcastle’s reported £150 million valuation—and have yet to submit an improved offer.
On Saturday, The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards reported that Newcastle had told Isak he would not be sold to Liverpool this summer. However, the situation appears to have shifted. Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, speaking on his YouTube channel, claimed the deal remains “absolutely on, absolutely concrete and absolutely likely.”
“Alexander Isak wants to go to Liverpool,” Romano said. “He doesn’t want to extend his contract. He wants Liverpool and Liverpool want him. Newcastle haven’t closed the door—it’s still an open story.”
Manager Eddie Howe also addressed the striker’s future after Newcastle’s 2-0 defeat to Atlético Madrid in their final pre-season friendly. While insisting Isak still has a place at the club, Howe suggested the situation must be resolved before he can reintegrate the Swede into the squad.
“He is here, so of course he has a future at Newcastle,” Howe said. “We’d love to have him back with the team, but the situation has to be right for that to happen. He doesn’t have a fitness issue. I’m aware of a feeling within the squad that there’s something there not to the benefit of the group.”
With tensions in the dressing room and Liverpool maintaining their pursuit, Isak’s future at St James’ Park remains uncertain as the new season approaches.
