Liverpool Make Final Call on Konaté Future as Guehi and Leoni Deals Advance

Liverpool are on the verge of sealing a double defensive swoop for Marc Guehi and Giovanni Leoni — and reports suggest the club has now reached a definitive decision on the future of Ibrahima Konaté.

The French international has been linked with a possible move to Real Madrid, particularly with his current contract running down and no extension yet in place. His deal at Anfield expires next summer, fuelling speculation that Liverpool might cash in before losing him for free.

However, according to fresh reports, the Reds have opted to keep Konaté for the upcoming season, regardless of progress on the Guehi and Leoni transfers. Manager Arne Slot is said to value the 25-year-old’s pace, physicality, and Champions League experience, viewing him as an important part of the defensive rotation as the team pushes for silverware on multiple fronts.

Liverpool’s pursuit of Crystal Palace star Guehi is at an advanced stage, with personal terms agreed and a £35 million package under discussion. The England international is seen as an immediate starter who can form a strong partnership with captain Virgil van Dijk.

Meanwhile, Italian Under-19 talent Giovanni Leoni has completed most of his medical checks and is set to sign a six-year deal running until 2031. The highly rated youngster is viewed as a long-term project rather than direct competition for the senior centre-backs.

With Konaté staying put, Guehi arriving to bolster the starting XI, and Leoni joining as one for the future, Liverpool’s defensive rebuild under Slot is taking shape — blending proven Premier League quality with promising youth.

The decision to retain Konaté also signals that Liverpool will prioritise contract talks in the coming months to avoid uncertainty over his future dragging into next summer.

As the transfer window edges towards its conclusion, Anfield looks set for both immediate reinforcement and strategic planning at the back — ensuring depth, stability, and a clear succession plan.
