Barcelona Set to Terminate Oriol Romeu’s Contract Amid Squad Reshuffle
Barcelona are preparing to part company with experienced midfielder Oriol Romeu as the club looks to trim its squad ahead of the new season. According to SPORT, the Catalan giants expect to finalize the mutual termination of his contract in the coming week.
The arrangement will see Barcelona hand Romeu a payoff to facilitate his departure as a free agent, despite the 32-year-old still having a year left on his deal. Several clubs have already shown interest, including former side Girona, while opportunities in Major League Soccer are also being explored.
A product of La Masia, Romeu rejoined Barcelona from Girona in 2023 as a short-term replacement for Sergio Busquets. Though he initially featured prominently under Xavi Hernández, his role diminished under Hansi Flick, leading to a loan return to Girona last season.
Romeu stayed behind in Barcelona this summer while the rest of the first-team squad traveled for their pre-season tour of Asia, a decision seen as a clear signal that his time at Camp Nou was nearing its end. The club now hopes to complete the exit in the coming days, allowing the midfielder to continue his career elsewhere.
