Liverpool’s instant response to Crystal Palace statement on Marc Guehi transfer…

Liverpool’s stance after Crystal Palace statement on Marc Guéhi

Liverpool remain firmly interested in signing Crystal Palace captain Marc Guéhi, but the Reds are treading carefully after the South London club’s mixed signals regarding his future.

The England defender, whose contract expires next summer, has been identified by Liverpool as a priority target to strengthen their backline. However, the Reds are reluctant to overpay, knowing Guéhi could be available on a free transfer in 12 months’ time.

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish admitted that sales are sometimes necessary to meet financial rules, while manager Oliver Glasner insisted that losing Guéhi this late in the window would be extremely damaging, especially after the departure of Eberechi Eze to Arsenal in a £67.5m deal.

Palace’s dilemma is clear: risk losing Guéhi for nothing next summer or cash in now at a reduced price. The club previously rejected bids of around £70m but, with just a year left on his contract, his current market value is closer to £30–45m.

Speaking after Palace’s Europa Conference League victory over Fredrikstad, Glasner underlined Guéhi’s importance:

“If Marc leaves, maybe I’ll need to dust off my boots since I used to play centre-back. It’s about the club’s future — we need depth in the squad.”

Liverpool, meanwhile, are weighing their options. They admire Guéhi’s composure, aerial strength, and leadership, but they will not allow Palace to dictate an inflated fee. The Merseyside club has already spent significantly this summer, yet with several departures, funds remain available.

The Reds could still make late moves for both Guéhi and Newcastle striker Alexander Isak before the deadline. However, they are also prepared to wait until next summer to secure Guéhi for free — though competition for a player of his calibre would likely be fierce.
