Crystal Palace Boss Oliver Glasner Blocks Liverpool’s Move for Marc Guehi
Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has made it clear he does not want to lose captain Marc Guehi before the transfer window closes, urging the club’s hierarchy to reject Liverpool’s advances. With just four days remaining until deadline day, Glasner is determined to keep the England international at Selhurst Park.
Liverpool opened talks to sign the 24-year-old centre-back earlier this month but have so far failed to meet Palace’s £40 million valuation. Sources suggest the Reds are confident they can negotiate a lower fee given Guehi is entering the final year of his contract. Chairman Steve Parish is aware of the financial risk, with the defender potentially leaving on a free next summer.
Guehi played in Palace’s 0-0 draw against Norwegian side Fredrikstad, securing their place in the Conference League group stage. Glasner, however, has publicly contradicted Parish’s stance, warning that replacing Guehi at this stage of the market would be “nearly impossible.”
“It’s Friday now, and the window closes on Monday—he must stay,” Glasner said. “He’s our captain, an England international, and the most experienced defender in the squad. Our recent success and clean sheets are built around him.”
When asked about Guehi’s commitment amid transfer speculation, Glasner added: “If Marc had wanted to leave, the deal would already be done. He’s focused, dedicated, and giving everything for the team.”
Palace have explored potential replacements, including Manchester City’s Manuel Akanji, Monaco’s Mohammed Salisu, Rennes’ Jeremy Jacquet, and Toulouse’s Jaydee Canvot, though Glasner is unconvinced any could match Guehi’s immediate impact.
Still, the final decision may rest with the board. After Palace’s 1-0 win over Fredrikstad, Parish commented: “If Marc wants to sign a new contract, he can stay. It’s a complicated situation and one we’ll address in the coming days.”
With Liverpool pushing to reinforce their defense and Palace desperate to hold onto their captain, the battle for Guehi looks set to dominate the final days of the transfer window.
