Liverpool receive transfer update on Marc Guehi as Crystal Palace clarify stance
Crystal Palace are in a tough position with captain Marc Guehi, who continues to feature for the team despite ongoing negotiations over a possible move to Liverpool before the transfer window shuts.
Guehi wore the armband in Palace’s Conference League play-off win against Fredrikstad, while teammate Eberechi Eze was absent due to his imminent £67.5m switch to Arsenal. Palace manager Oliver Glasner admitted the situation has been difficult, with his squad already stretched thin.
Glasner confirmed Liverpool will not be able to sign Guehi in the coming week, stressing the defender must remain available for Palace’s upcoming matches. “We have no choice but to keep him for these games. Everyone knows it—we simply don’t have enough players right now,” he said.
The Austrian boss also expressed his frustration with the lack of squad depth, joking that he might have to step in himself if Guehi were to leave. Palace, who only named nine substitutes out of a possible 12 on Thursday, are demanding £45m for the England international, while Liverpool are unwilling to go beyond £35m.
Club chairman Steve Parish struck a more pragmatic tone, saying: “If Marc wants to extend his contract, he stays. But we all know clubs sometimes have to sell players to comply with financial rules.”
Attention on Guehi grew after the Fredrikstad game, with cameras following him as he applauded fans. When asked about the speculation, he laughed: “There are other players too, you know.”
Meanwhile, Parish confirmed Eze’s departure to Arsenal is imminent, praising the midfielder’s contribution but insisting Palace must move forward: “He’s been fantastic for the club, but now we have to rebuild and bring in players who can strengthen the squad overall.”
