On the eve of Barcelonaâs showdown with Newcastle United, Hansi Flick struck a note of respect and caution in his pre-match press conference, highlighting both the difficulty of the challenge and his belief in his young squad.
âItâs always important to start well, but we know it wonât be easy,â the Barça coach said. âWe have to play at our best level. We want to work very hard, play at our best level.â
Flick singled out the Magpiesâ St. Jamesâ Park as a special venue. âNewcastle probably have the best atmosphere in the Premier League. I expect a strong team with a lot of intensity. Theyâve been building this team for years, and their staff has done a fantastic job.â
Despite Barcelonaâs relative youth, the German insisted experience is not lacking. âWe are a young team, but that doesnât mean we lack the experience to face these kinds of matches. We showed that last season.â
The absence of teenage star Lamine Yamal has forced Flick to look at alternatives, and he pointed to Marcus Rashford as the answer. âThatâs why heâs here â in case any of our attackers canât play. He showed on Sunday how good he is, and I hope he shows it again in England.â
On potential lineup decisions, Flick kept his cards close to his chest. âWeâll see tomorrow. I need todayâs training session and eight hours of sleep before deciding who plays.â
He also praised 18-year-old winger Roony Bardghji. âI didnât know him very well. I watched a few games and was surprised by his progress. Iâm happy with him and weâll see how he develops. He has great potential and Iâm very pleased with him.â
Asked whether Ronald AraĂşjo could be deployed to combat Newcastleâs physical frontline, Flick said the option was open but emphasized collective strength. âWe have a great team. Eric \[GarcĂa] and CubarsĂ have done well too. It could happen, but weâll see tomorrow.â
As kickoff looms, Flickâs words reflected both admiration for the challenge Newcastle presents and a quiet confidence that his Barcelona side, young as it may be, has the tools to rise to the occasion.
