There are growing fears that Saturday’s Merseyside Derby could be postponed after the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning ahead of the clash at Anfield.
Liverpool, who sit top of the Premier League with a perfect record after victories over Bournemouth, Newcastle, Arsenal, and Burnley, are set to host sixth-placed Everton, who have collected seven points from their first four matches.
However, the weather could become the biggest obstacle. According to The Liverpool Echo, rainfall is expected to sweep across the north-west, with conditions set to be persistent, heavy, and accompanied by strong winds from Saturday afternoon through the night. The warning is in place from 9am Saturday until 6am Sunday, with the Met Office cautioning of potential flooding and travel disruption.
At present, there has been no official indication that the derby will be postponed, but supporters are being urged to prepare for delays when travelling to Anfield for the lunchtime kick-off.
The warning comes less than a year after December 2024’s derby at Goodison Park was postponed due to Storm Darragh, which wreaked havoc across the UK sporting calendar. That fixture was eventually replayed in February, ending in a dramatic 2-2 draw courtesy of James Tarkowski’s late volley—the final derby at Goodison before Everton’s move.
With the weather threatening to intervene once again, fans and players alike face an anxious wait to see if one of English football’s fiercest rivalries will go ahead as planned.
