Champions League rocked by scandal on opening day: Guimarães demands doping probe into Barcelona star
The UEFA Champions League has been plunged into controversy on day one. After Newcastle United’s 2-1 defeat to Barcelona at St. James’ Park, Magpies captain Bruno Guimarães erupted in fury, demanding “absolute justice” and hinting at foul play.
In a heated post-match outburst that spread rapidly online, the Brazilian midfielder declared:
“We demand absolute justice. UEFA must act immediately — a full anti-doping test for that key Barcelona player. They stole this game. If not, this stains the Champions League forever.”
The “key player” in question is widely understood to be 17-year-old sensation Lamine Yamal, who tore Newcastle apart with relentless dribbles and a decisive assist for Robert Lewandowski’s 72nd-minute winner. While many praised a dazzling display of raw talent, Guimarães implied something more sinister:
“He ran like a demon for 90 minutes — no fatigue, no errors. Incredible, yes, but at what cost? UEFA knows what I mean: test him now, or this will not end well.”
A storm with history
Guimarães’ accusations come just weeks after both Yamal and Lewandowski were fined €5,000 for protocol breaches during a Champions League anti-doping test. Barça coach Hansi Flick was also sanctioned and suspended. At the time, the club downplayed the affair as a logistical slip — but the cloud has now resurfaced.
UEFA wasted no time responding. The governing body announced that anti-doping inspectors will fly to Barcelona immediately to conduct surprise tests on Yamal and other key players. Blood, urine, and hormone analysis are on the table, in line with WADA’s newly updated 2025 regulations.
“We take any complaint seriously, especially from a captain. The integrity of the competition is non-negotiable,” a UEFA spokesperson confirmed.
Backlash in Newcastle and Barcelona
Newcastle fans erupted in support of their captain, flooding social media with #JusticiaChampions and chants of “fair play” echoing from Tyneside. Coach Eddie Howe backed his star midfielder:
“Bruno speaks for all of us. We play clean, and demand the same. That Barça kid has talent, but football must remain fair.”
Barcelona’s reaction was immediate and furious. Club president Joan Laporta denounced Guimarães’ remarks as “irresponsible and envious,” tweeting:
“Talent isn’t doping. It’s forged at La Masia. Let UEFA investigate — the truth will prevail.”
Yamal himself broke his silence with a short Instagram story:
“I only play with my heart. Test me if you want — I’m clean.”
A battle beyond the pitch
The stakes are enormous. Newcastle, backed by over €500m in Saudi investment, see the Champions League as their path to European greatness, making a home defeat to a rebuilding Barça sting all the more. Guimarães, valued at €100m and once a Barça transfer target, has emerged as the rallying voice of a wounded squad. His warning — “If UEFA do nothing, we’ll go to FIFA and the international press” — has forced action, evoking memories of past scandals.
For now, Barça top their group with three points, but a shadow lingers over their campaign. What began as a night of triumph for a teenage prodigy may spiral into the Champions League’s first great controversy of 2025/26.
