Captain’s Notes – Virgil van Dijk
The Carabao Cup has been a special competition for me during my time at Liverpool, and I know our supporters feel the same. Together, we’ve enjoyed some incredible moments—most memorably lifting the trophy at Wembley in 2022 and again in 2024 after beating Chelsea. Those finals will stay with me forever.
Of course, last season’s defeat to Newcastle in the final was tough to take, but it only makes us more determined to go again. Tonight marks the start of another journey as we welcome Southampton, one of my former clubs, to Anfield.
We come into this match with real confidence after a hard-earned derby win over Everton at the weekend. To win three matches in six days, each against strong, well-organised opponents, shows the quality, resilience, and spirit within this squad. The work we put in every day is reflected in these performances.
As I’ve said many times, we will need everyone this season. Substitutes have already made big contributions in games, and those who haven’t played as much remain ready to step in and make a difference. With so many fixtures ahead across different competitions, success will depend on the whole group—not just 11 or 12 players.
Looking ahead to tonight, I’m excited for another special Anfield atmosphere. The backing from the stands against Everton and Atlético Madrid was outstanding, and I’m sure the supporters will once again be right behind us as we begin.
