Reaction’We were better and deserved to win’ – Alexis Mac Allister on Liverpool 1-0 Real Madrid

Match-winner Alexis Mac Allister praised Liverpool’s collective effort after their hard-fought 1-0 victory over Real Madrid at Anfield.

The Reds fully deserved the three points in Tuesday night’s Champions League clash, with Mac Allister’s well-timed header just after the hour mark proving decisive.

Speaking to Amazon Prime Video Sport, the Argentine reflected on the importance of the performance rather than just the result.

“It was a really good game against a top side,” he said. “It’s an important win, but it doesn’t mean everything. We learned from last season — we finished top of the league phase and still went out early. So we have to keep pushing, keep building confidence. But yes, it’s a very good day.”

Mac Allister met a superb delivery from Dominik Szoboszlai to finally beat Thibaut Courtois, who had been outstanding throughout and frustrated Liverpool with multiple brilliant saves.

Explaining the goal, Mac Allister said: “Normally I’m the one blocking for Hugo [Ekitike], but this time I blocked, saw the space and made the run. Dom gave me a great ball — I just had to head it in.

“Courtois is a fantastic goalkeeper, everyone knows that. He made some big saves again. But today we were the better team, and we deserved the win.”

Following Saturday’s 2-0 win over Aston Villa, Arne Slot’s side delivered another composed, confident display — with Mac Allister once again at the heart of it.

Reflecting on his recent form, the No.10 admitted the season hadn’t started the way he hoped, but things are changing.

“I always think about the team first,” he said. “It’s true the beginning of the season wasn’t what I wanted — it was a bit difficult. But now I’m finding the rhythm. I just needed a run of games, and I’m happy I got to play against Villa and again today.”

Mac Allister’s influence continues to grow this season, with 480 passes completed and 15 appearances already to his name, along with two assists.

Liverpool now look to build on another standout European night, with momentum shifting firmly in their favour.
