Premier League Managers Call for Common-Sense VAR Reform to End ‘Nervousness’ on the Pitch
Several Premier League managers are reportedly uniting in their calls for practical changes to VAR, arguing that the current system is creating unnecessary “nervousness and hesitation” among players, referees, and fans alike.
Coaches across the league have voiced concerns that VAR — initially introduced to bring more fairness — is instead disrupting the flow and emotion of matches. They are now urging the Premier League and PGMOL to adopt a more transparent, simplified approach to video reviews, ensuring that decisions are made quicker and with greater consistency.
One top-flight manager described the current setup as “too robotic,” while another said players are “afraid to celebrate” due to the constant fear of a VAR intervention.
Proposed adjustments include clearer communication between on-field officials and VAR, time limits for reviews, and more authority for referees to make final calls without overreliance on the technology.
