Liverpool are preparing for major spending in January, with the club now in talks to sign two Premier League standouts as part of a renewed effort to derail Arsenal’s push for the title.
After last weekend’s defeat to Manchester City, Liverpool sit eight points behind Mikel Arteta’s side following the first 11 league matches. Despite the setback, the club appears determined to back Arne Slot in the upcoming transfer window as they attempt to narrow the gap.
Liverpool’s title defense under pressure
A 3–0 loss at the Etihad — with goals from Erling Haaland, Nico González, and Jeremy Doku — highlighted Liverpool’s struggles this season. The Reds have already suffered more league defeats than they did across the entirety of the last campaign, placing their title defense in serious jeopardy.
Liverpool invested heavily over the summer, bringing in Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, and Giovanni Leoni. The club also secured new contracts for Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk. However, they were unable to keep Trent Alexander-Arnold, who departed for Real Madrid.
Despite their summer overhaul, the Reds return to Premier League action this weekend in eighth place, level on points with Manchester United after losing five of their last six league fixtures. Slot will be desperate to kickstart a turnaround when Nottingham Forest visit Anfield on Saturday.
Liverpool preparing another January splash
Although the club initially intended to hold off on further spending after their expensive summer, plans have shifted. Liverpool are now prepared to support Slot in January as they try to revive their title hunt and apply pressure to Arsenal.
According to DaveOCKOP, Liverpool have identified two Premier League players as targets as they look to reduce the current eight-point deficit.
The Reds have a strong history of strengthening in January, previously signing Virgil van Dijk (2017), Luis Díaz (2022), and Cody Gakpo (2023). Another attacking reinforcement could be on the way.
DaveOCKOP reports that Liverpool will open preliminary talks with Bournemouth this weekend about signing Antoine Semenyo. Sporting director Richard Hughes — who was instrumental in bringing Semenyo to the Cherries for £10.5 million in 2023 — remains a big admirer of the 25-year-old forward. Bournemouth are expected to demand around £75 million for the Ghana international if Liverpool choose to move forward.
Important fixtures ahead
Liverpool face Nottingham Forest at Anfield on Saturday as they head into a relatively favorable run of matches, offering a chance to build momentum.
After Forest, Slot’s men will host PSV in the Champions League before traveling to London to take on West Ham. December begins with a home clash against high-flying Sunderland, followed by away trips to Leeds United and Inter Milan in both league and European competition.
