Florian Wirtz learns during his post-match interview that his equaliser has been officially ruled as an own goal.

Florian Wirtz was denied what would have been his first Premier League goal on Wednesday night after Liverpool’s 81st-minute equaliser against Sunderland was officially recorded as an own goal.

The big summer arrival from Bayer Leverkusen — whose transfer could reach £116 million — seemed poised to finally break his scoring drought after going 17 league games without finding the net.

With just minutes remaining, Wirtz received a pass from Curtis Jones and danced his way into the Sunderland area. A sharp touch allowed him to skip past Dan Ballard, and it initially appeared he had finally opened his account. Even the Sky Sports commentators were convinced the goal belonged to him.

But shortly afterward, the Premier League confirmed the equaliser had been attributed to Mukiele as an own goal instead.
