Back in 2022, Wayne Rooney told Manchester United to build their team around four players, but only one remains at the club.
At the time, Manchester United were struggling under interim manager Ralf Rangnick following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s departure.
During a Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football segment, Wayne Rooney identified four players he felt United should have built their team around.
He stated: “I believe [Jadon] Sancho will improve next year, and Marcus [Rashford] will also get better. They have promising young players. Jesse Lingard should be playing because he brings energy and quality. Scott McTominay has performed well.”
Rooney added: “They do have some promising young talents; they just need to gain confidence and believe in their abilities to perform at their best. And of course, the new manager will likely bring in his own players and shape the team.”
Two years after Rooney’s comments, only Marcus Rashford remains at Old Trafford. Rashford had a challenging 2023/24 season and has struggled this campaign. Meanwhile, Scott McTominay transferred to Italian Serie A side Napoli during the summer transfer window.
