Mikel Merino is back in Arsenal training to face Tottenham following Declan Rice’s red card. Congratulations, Arsenal fans.

Arsenal will have to delay the debut of their new summer acquisition, Mikel Merino, due to an unfortunate injury sustained during his first training session with the team. Reports indicate that Merino might be out for up to two months, which is a significant setback for Mikel Arteta’s season plans.

Merino joined Arsenal as their third major summer signing, following David Raya’s permanent transfer from Brentford and Riccardo Calafiori’s move from Bologna after a strong EURO 2024 performance. The highly-regarded midfielder was expected to team up with Declan Rice in Arsenal’s central midfield. However, with Rice currently suspended due to a red card and Merino injured, Arteta will need to adjust his midfield strategy.

The injury, which occurred when Merino collided with center-back Gabriel Magalhaes, resulted in a fractured shoulder. The *Daily Mail* reports that Merino is expected to be out until after the October international break, missing crucial Premier League and Champions League matches for Arsenal.

Merino’s absence is particularly challenging as Arsenal faces tough matches against Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, Atalanta, and Paris Saint-Germain. His injury opens opportunities for Thomas Partey and Jorginho to step up, but the timing of his absence is far from ideal for Arteta’s squad, which aims for a strong start in both domestic and European competitions.

Despite this setback, Merino remains a valuable addition to Arsenal. The £32 million signing from Real Sociedad brings a strong mix of physicality and technical skill, which should complement Rice well in midfield. Once recovered, Merino is expected to play a crucial role as a deep-lying playmaker, aiding Arsenal in controlling games and pursuing success this season.
