He’s occupying all three of them” – Joe Cole lavishes praise on Liverpool star for his ‘movement’ in win over Crystal Palace

Former Chelsea winger and television pundit Joe Cole expressed strong admiration for Diogo Jota following Liverpool’s 1-0 win against Crystal Palace on October 5. The match at Selhurst Park featured Jota scoring the only goal, securing three important points for the Reds. This victory not only showcased Liverpool’s impressive form under manager Arne Slot but also placed them four points ahead at the top of the table, reinforcing their early-season dominance. Jota’s performance was crucial, and although the final score suggests a tightly contested match, Liverpool could have won by a larger margin.

Jota’s goal came in the ninth minute, courtesy of a well-placed cross from Cody Gakpo. Positioned on the left, Gakpo delivered a precise ball into the box, which Jota expertly finished on his first touch, beating Crystal Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson. While Liverpool failed to extend their lead, it was Jota’s quick thinking and sharp finishing that ultimately determined the match’s outcome.

Cole, now a respected pundit, quickly analyzed Liverpool’s strong performance and Jota’s pivotal role in the win. Speaking to TNT Sports, he praised the team’s dynamic play and highlighted the effectiveness of their right-sided attack, particularly the contributions of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah, and Curtis Jones. He noted their movement off the ball and ability to exploit gaps in Crystal Palace’s defense were key to their early dominance. “When the defenders come out, they’re running into those spaces; it’s where the goal came from,” Cole explained.

Cole also highlighted Jota’s ability to stretch Crystal Palace’s defense. “They’ve been fantastic at breaking it down, especially Jota, who occupies all three of them,” he stated. His remarks underscored how well Jota fits into Liverpool’s attacking system, often navigating between defenders and creating confusion in the opposing backline.

Since Arne Slot took over Liverpool in the summer, Jota has emerged as the preferred choice in the number nine role, often starting ahead of other forwards like Darwin Nunez. Slot’s confidence in Jota has been rewarded, as the striker has scored four goals and provided two assists in nine appearances this season, combining both scoring and playmaking to become an invaluable asset.

Jota’s significance to Liverpool extends beyond this season. Since joining from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020 for around £45 million, he has consistently proven his value. In 153 matches for Liverpool, he has scored 59 goals and made 21 assists, establishing himself as a key player in both domestic and European competitions.

His versatility is a major strength; whether playing centrally or drifting wide, Jota consistently impacts games. His technical skills, sharp movement, and finishing ability make him difficult for defenders to handle. Slot’s trust in him as a central figure in the attack has boosted his confidence, and he is clearly thriving in this role.

As the season unfolds, Jota is expected to remain vital to Liverpool’s pursuit of silverware. His knack for scoring in critical moments and ability to link with teammates like Salah and Gakpo will be crucial for maintaining Liverpool’s title challenge. With pundits like Joe Cole praising him, Jota’s influence on the team is only set to grow.
