Flick talks Yamal, Lewandowski, Szczesny, Pena, Fermin ahead of Alaves vs Barcelona
Barcelona is aiming for its eighth La Liga victory this Sunday against Deportivo Alaves, led by Luis Garcia Plaza, at Mendizorroza Stadium. After a disappointing loss to CA Osasuna, the team rebounded with a win against Young Boys in the UEFA Champions League and is looking to build on that momentum.
In a press conference, head coach Hansi Flick emphasized the importance of winning against Alaves to enter the international break on a high note, stating, “We are very focused because it is crucial to secure three points.” He expressed confidence, saying he prefers to focus positively on the match.
Flick highlighted the need for his team to start strong, minimize mistakes, control possession, create opportunities, and aim to score. He acknowledged Alaves will provide a high-intensity challenge, requiring full concentration from the start.
Regarding new signing Wojciech Szczesny, reports indicated he trained well and could join the squad, but Flick confirmed he won’t be available for this match as he needs more time to adapt. Flick praised Szczesny’s quality and experience, noting that he is ready to contribute when fit.
Flick clarified that while Robert Lewandowski played a role in Szczesny’s decision to join, the goalkeeping coach, Jose Ramon de la Fuente, was more influential. He also stated that Szczesny’s arrival will benefit goalkeeper Inaki Pena, providing the team with more options.
On injuries, Flick took responsibility for Fermin Lopez’s situation, emphasizing the importance of communication with national team coaches. He downplayed concerns about player call-ups for international duty, stating it’s beyond his control and recognizing it as an honor for players.
When asked about rotations after previous challenges, Flick affirmed he plans to rotate the squad now that they have a four-day gap before the next game. He acknowledged the dissatisfaction of Lewandowski and Lamine Yamal about being substituted recently but affirmed that such decisions are part of managing the team. He remains optimistic that both players will respond positively in the upcoming match.
