Paul Gascoigne has expressed strong support for Chelsea’s dynamic midfielder Cole Palmer, asserting that he should be the focal point of England’s attacking strategy. In an exclusive interview with Football365, Gascoigne described Palmer—who transferred from Manchester City to Chelsea for around £40 million—as “unbelievable.”
Palmer’s standout performances in the 2023/24 season earned him a place in Gareth Southgate’s squad for the upcoming European Championship. Although he didn’t start any matches, he made a significant impact by scoring in the final against Spain.
Amid a wealth of attacking talent, Palmer’s versatility allows him to play both behind the striker and on the right wing. While Bukayo Saka is a key player on the right, competition for the position behind Harry Kane includes Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, and Palmer, with interim manager Lee Carsley also bringing in Morgan Gibbs-White and Curtis Jones.
When asked who England should build around, Gascoigne enthusiastically endorsed Palmer, noting, “I didn’t realize how good he was! He’s been unbelievable. He’s hungry, scored four against Brighton, and is sharp with a good team.”
Gascoigne acknowledged the surrounding talent, praising Grealish’s eagerness for the ball and Foden’s excellent form, while also recognizing Saka’s impressive contributions.
Reflecting on Carsley’s interim management, Gascoigne expressed his preference for an English manager, citing the abundance of foreign managers in the Premier League. He praised Carsley’s current performance and suggested he deserves an opportunity to prove himself.
Recalling his own experiences with England, Gascoigne fondly remembered Chris Waddle as a crucial support during his early days at Tottenham.
As England gears up for their upcoming matches, Gascoigne’s endorsement of Cole Palmer heightens the excitement around the team’s attacking potential and the role of their interim manager.
