Former Liverpool striker Emile Heskey has urged fans to appreciate Darwin Nunez’s contributions this season, despite the Uruguayan’s reduced role under new manager Arne Slot. The 25-year-old forward, who joined Liverpool in 2022 for around £64 million, has seen his playing time decrease since Slot took over, with Diogo Jota often favored in the starting lineup.
Nunez has appeared nine times this season, scoring two goals and assisting once. However, his opportunities in the Premier League have been limited, with just one start—a 3-0 victory over Bournemouth in September. In a recent match against Chelsea, Nunez came on as a substitute for the injured Jota, winning five out of seven duels in the first half and making a noticeable impact, although he did not score.
In an interview with Tribal Football, Heskey praised Nunez’s work ethic and his contributions to the team. “He is a fighter, determined, and a workhorse,” Heskey stated. He acknowledged that while Nunez’s goal tally isn’t high, his energy and ability to break down defenses are valuable assets for Liverpool. “We need to appreciate his goals, assists, and tenacity to open up defenses,” he added.
Since Slot’s appointment, Jota has been the first choice, scoring four goals and providing two assists in ten games, which has relegated Nunez to the bench. This situation has raised questions about Nunez’s future at the club. Despite joining the same summer as Erling Haaland, who has excelled at Manchester City, Nunez has struggled to keep pace, with 35 goals in 105 appearances for Liverpool compared to Haaland’s impressive record.
Nunez’s uncertain role could lead the club to pursue new attacking options in the summer transfer window. If his playing time remains limited, he may reconsider his future at Anfield. Although his contract runs until 2028, his long-term position at the club may depend on whether he can reclaim a more prominent role in the upcoming months.
As it stands, Nunez’s future at Liverpool is uncertain, and his performances in the rest of the season will be crucial in determining if he can return to being a first-team regular or if he will seek more playing time elsewhere.
