Chelsea are busy preparing for the upcoming Premier League season under new boss Enzo Maresca but one of the club’s legends has gone as far to say his former side will never win the top-flight crown ever again.
Over the summer, Stamford Bridge experienced a managerial change with Mauricio Pochettino leaving. Enzo Maresca has been brought in from Leicester City, where he secured promotion back to the Premier League in his first season at the helm.
The Italian will look to enhance upon the Blues’ sixth-place finish from last season, which concluded without any trophies.
Chelsea has seen a busy summer with significant squad changes. Midfielders Omari Kellyman, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, and Renato Veiga have joined the team from Aston Villa, Leicester, and Basel, respectively.
Tosin Adarabioyo has come over from Fulham on a free transfer, while left-back Caleb Wiley has arrived from Atlanta United, striker Marc Guiu from Barcelona, and goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen from Villarreal.
Departing Chelsea on free transfers are defenders Thiago Silva and Malang Sarr. Additionally, the club has earned transfer fees from the sales of Ian Maatsen, Hakim Ziyech, Omari Hutchinson, and Lewis Hall.
Conor Gallagher is also close to departing, with a discounted deal agreed upon with Atletico Madrid.
Since being sold by Roman Abramovich in 2022, Chelsea has been under the ownership of BlueCo and chairman Todd Boehly, who presided over regular success during Abramovich’s tenure.
However, former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf, who played for the club from 1996 to 2001 and won the FA Cup twice, is skeptical about the current direction under the new ownership. He has suggested that while the club might achieve cup success, they may not be able to win the Premier League title again if the current trajectory continues.
In an interview with Instant Casino, the Frenchman remarked, “Some fans believe Chelsea can start fresh next season, but it won’t truly be starting from scratch after spending a billion pounds.”
The club can use their money however they choose, but as a former player, I find it somewhat disgraceful to witness what is happening.
The squad has the talent, but it lacks leaders and reliable players, which is Enzo Maresca’s main challenge.
“Chelsea might have a chance at winning a cup, such as the FA Cup this season, but winning the Premier League is out of the question.”
