Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag walked on the pitch to console academy product Will Fish after he suffered a serious injury during Saturday’s pre-season clash against Liverpool.
Ten Hag’s team ended their pre-season tour of the United States with a loss, as goals from Fabio Carvalho, Curtis Jones, and Kostas Tsimikas secured a 3-0 victory for the Reds.
Despite having several good chances during the match, the United coaching staff will find some optimism in the positive periods of play observed at the Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, South Carolina.
However, injuries have once again marred another pre-season match.
After the announcement that Leny Yoro and Rasmus Hojlund would be out for extended periods, several defenders were substituted on Saturday due to injuries.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof, and Jonny Evans all began the match but were taken off at different points.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag took to the pitch to comfort Will Fish after the young defender sustained a serious injury during Saturday’s pre-season match against Liverpool.
In the game, Liverpool secured a 3-0 victory with goals from Fabio Carvalho, Curtis Jones, and Kostas Tsimikas, ending Ten Hag’s side’s pre-season tour of the United States on a losing note.
Despite creating several chances, United’s coaching staff found some positive aspects in their play at the Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, South Carolina.
Injuries, however, once again disrupted their pre-season plans. Following the news that Leny Yoro and Rasmus Hojlund would be out for extended periods, several defenders were forced off the field on Saturday due to injuries.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof, and Jonny Evans all started the match but were substituted at different points. After Lindelof and Evans left at half-time, Will Fish, one of their replacements, was stretchered off after a tough challenge with Liverpool’s Harvey Blair.
The 21-year-old, who spent last season on loan at Hibernian, appeared distressed as he lay on the ground. The seriousness of the injury prompted Ten Hag to approach Fish before he was replaced by fellow academy player Maxi Oyedele.
Post-match, Ten Hag told MUTV: “We need to evaluate what happened. The initial assessment with Will Fish is that it’s an impact injury.”
“We also had to substitute Jonny Evans at half-time because he was unwell. Victor Lindelof was taken off as a precaution. So, yes, there are some injuries, but we need to assess how severe they are,” Ten Hag said.
Fish, who recently played in United’s 3-2 victory over Real Betis, was eager to face their arch-rivals Liverpool.
