Liverpool have reportedly rejected an opening offer from Southampton for attacking midfielder Fabio Carvalho.
David Ornstein of The Athletic reports that the Reds have rejected a £15 million offer from the Saints for the 21-year-old but may consider selling him if a higher offer is presented.
As expected, Carvalho, who has been on loan twice since joining Anfield, desires to be a regular starter—a role that Russell Martin could provide for him.
From Liverpool’s perspective, there is little interest in approving another loan for the Portuguese playmaker, indicating a preference for a permanent sale. This stance might seem surprising given Carvalho’s strong pre-season performances, including scoring against Manchester United earlier on Sunday.
Will Southampton secure Fabio Carvalho?
After securing promotion to the Premier League by defeating Leeds United 1-0 in the Championship Play-Off final at Wembley, the Saints are now in a stronger financial position. With £140 million earned from their promotion (F365), they have greater spending power compared to some clubs, such as Leeds, which has had to sell key players like Archie Gray to Spurs and Crysencio Summerville to West Ham.
