Fabrizio Romano says second Liverpool signing who could follow Zubimendi is still a possibility

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Liverpool signing Anthony Gordon this summer remains a possibility. Albeit one that may be dependent on Newcastle first dropping the price for the England international.

The Merseysiders have not yet made an offer for the 23-year-old winger, and there have been no new discussions between the clubs.

“If Newcastle reduces the price, Liverpool might consider making a move for him in the final weeks of the transfer window. However, it’s not imminent right now, as there is still no bid or recent communication between the clubs,” the CaughtOffside columnist told GiveMeSport.

“We’ll have to wait and see how things unfold. Currently, it’s not imminent, and we must acknowledge that Newcastle wants to retain Anthony Gordon, making a deal difficult. The interest is confirmed, but it’s not progressing quickly.”

Additionally, it’s important to note that Richard Hughes and his team are currently focused on possibly acquiring Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi.

Despite having previously turned down approaches from Arsenal and Bayern Munich, the Spaniard is reportedly interested in the possibility of joining Liverpool.

Our sporting director has emphasized that this transfer window would be characterized by opportunism.

In the case of Zubimendi, it appears that opportunism aligns well with the team’s needs. A potential expenditure of £51.7m to trigger the release clause fits the market value and could address a crucial need in Arne Slot’s squad.

The next move for Liverpool is still uncertain.

Unlike Zubimendi, Anthony Gordon does not have a release clause, and Newcastle seems determined to retain their top winger for the foreseeable future.

Given that the Englishman has already indicated his willingness to move to Merseyside and that the club views him as a valuable asset amid a near PSR crisis, there might be an opportunity to pursue here.
