Jamie Carragher names ‘frightening’ player Liverpool must sign this summer after Martin Zubimendi setback

Jamie Carragher has revealed the one player he hopes Liverpool sign this summer before the transfer window closes.

Liverpool have been relatively inactive in the summer transfer window for the 2024/25 season, remaining the only Premier League team not to have made any new signings.

The club appeared close to finalizing a deal for Spanish midfielder Martin Zubimendi this week, but the transfer collapsed on Monday when the 25-year-old chose to remain with his long-time team, Real Sociedad.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has shared his opinion on which players he would like to see join the club before the transfer window closes on August 30.

Carragher has identified fellow Evertonian Anthony Gordon as his ideal summer signing, drawing a comparison to a Liverpool legend. In an interview with The Mirror, he commented: “I’d love to see us sign Anthony Gordon. His pace is extraordinary; it’s the kind of speed that makes you say ‘wow’ when you see him outpace a fullback.”

Carragher believes that if Liverpool were interested in signing Gordon, he could bring a similar pace to what they had with Sadio Mané, addressing a current lack in their attack.

Reports indicate that Liverpool had previously tried to acquire Gordon, with a deal agreed in June but ultimately falling through. According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle, needing to meet the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules, agreed to sell Gordon for £75 million, with Joe Gomez moving in the opposite direction for £45 million.

However, following the sales of Yankuba Minteh to Brighton and Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest, Newcastle no longer needs to sell Gordon to comply with regulations. As a result, the move was canceled, even though medicals had been scheduled.

In the 2023/24 season, Gordon had a standout year with the Magpies, which led to his selection for Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2024.

The 23-year-old netted 12 goals and provided 11 assists in 48 matches for Newcastle last season and earned one cap for the Three Lions during the European Championships.
