Phil Jones reportedly earned millions from his image rights during his time at Manchester United.
Jones, 32, has recently announced his retirement from professional football after not being with a club since leaving Old Trafford at the end of the 22/23 season.
In an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live, he stated, “My career ended sooner than I would have liked. While it was disappointing, I prefer to stay positive. I completed my A license last season and worked with the U18s, which was a valuable and enjoyable experience.”
Jones also mentioned, “I ultimately want to return to the field and challenge myself. I’m interested in coaching and leading a team. I understand the steps required to achieve this and am ready to take them.”
When asked if he had officially retired, the former England player confirmed, “Yes. It was clear that I struggled towards the end of my career. I gave everything I had, and unfortunately, it ended as it did.”
Despite limited playing time in his final season with United, Jones earned significantly off the field. According to a Daily Mail report from 2023, he earned £4.2 million from his image rights.
Paul Pogba, Jones’ former teammate at United, is said to have kept a UK image rights company with assets totaling £5 million, which includes £2.4 million in cash.
The report also revealed that Frenchman Anthony Martial earned £8 million from his image rights after joining the Premier League club in 2015.
At the beginning of last season, Jones confirmed he was working on his coaching qualifications.
On social media, he shared: “I’m excited to start the global football sport directorship course with the PFA business school. I’m learning new aspects of the game while continuing to pursue my A license and other coaching badges at the club that has given me so much. Looking forward to it.”
