Chelsea star Noni Madueke was booed by Wolves for supporters at Molineux for a bizarre reason on Sunday afternoon.
Chelsea traveled to the West Midlands seeking to recover from a 2-0 loss to Manchester City in their season opener. Following a victory against Swiss team Servette in the Europa Conference League play-off first leg earlier in the week, the Blues started strongly when Nicolas Jackson scored with a header just two minutes in.
However, Madueke, who had scored at Stamford Bridge on Thursday and was playing on the right flank, faced a hostile reception from Wolves fans. Despite not having played for any of Wolves’ rivals, he was loudly booed whenever he touched the ball.
The hostility stemmed from a recent Instagram story where Madueke appeared to disparage Wolverhampton by posting “Everything about this place is s***” and tagging his location as ‘Wolverhampton’ to his 966,000 followers. He later acknowledged the mistake in a follow-up post, humorously noting the error and the swift reaction from fans.
Madueke’s every touch was met with derision, and any mistake he made was met with loud cheers. His negative comment about the city clearly inflamed the home crowd, contributing to a charged atmosphere for the 2pm kick-off.
Wolves equalized in the 27th minute when Mateus Cunha scored after a brilliant run from Rayan Ait-Nouri, finishing past Robert Sanchez.
