Liverpool are closing in on a deal to sign Juventus forward Federico Chiesa and fans have noticed something interesting.
The Italian forward is expected to be the first new signing for Arne Slot’s team this season. This comes after Liverpool secured a transfer for Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who will join in 2025.
Chiesa was omitted from Juventus’ lineup by new manager Thiago Motta as the new season approaches and had been rumored to move to Barcelona before Liverpool increased their interest in the 26-year-old.
As he prepared to join Liverpool, Chiesa expressed his excitement at the airport, saying, “I’m very happy and can’t wait to become a Liverpool player. My family and I are truly thrilled.”
Liverpool’s new sporting director, Richard Hughes, had previously mentioned that the club would be ‘opportunistic’ in the transfer market, and Chiesa’s acquisition aligns with that strategy, costing an initial £10.9 million.
This summer, Liverpool has seen substantial revenue from player sales, including Sepp van den Berg and Fabio Carvalho to Brentford, and Bobby Clark to RB Salzburg. Additionally, another Premier League transfer has bolstered their funds.
Tottenham broke their transfer record to sign Dominic Solanke from Bournemouth for £65 million, and Liverpool benefited from a 20% sell-on clause in the deal, netting nearly £8 million. This amount almost covers Chiesa’s transfer fee.
Fans have noticed the financial impact, with one commenting on the strategic foresight of Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes in negotiating the sell-on clause. Another noted that the £3.3 million spent on Chiesa is a great deal, while another fan praised the business acumen, highlighting the rarity of such value.
A fifth fan remarked: “In today’s market, getting Chiesa with just a ‘Solanke bonus’ is an incredible deal.”
Before the Chiesa transfer was finalized, Liverpool’s new manager Slot expressed that the lack of new signings did not worry him as he prepared for his first Premier League season.
“I have confidence in the team,” he said. “I’ve mentioned before that I inherited a very good squad, including many young players. These young players have the potential to develop as they mature.
We will work diligently with them and place our trust in them. They demonstrated last week that they deserve this trust by winning 2-0 at Ipswich Town in our Premier League opener. I hope they can deliver similar performances on Sunday.”
