Chelsea have agreed to sell a player just one season after bringing him to the club, and Premier League are not happy.
During the summer 2024/25 transfer window, The Blues have been active, adding players such as Pedro Neto, Joao Felix, and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to their roster.
New manager Enzo Maresca has been blunt in his statements since taking over, criticizing the squad size and stating that several players will be excluded from matches and should consider finding new clubs.
It seems one of the players designated for a move has agreed to leave Chelsea, but fans are upset after learning the specifics of the deal.
L’Equipe reports that Chelsea has agreed to sell Deivid Washington to RC Strasbourg, a Ligue 1 club, for a sum that will set a new transfer record for the French team.
Chelsea will receive €21 million for Washington, who was acquired from Brazilian club Santos for €16 million just 12 months ago. The young forward had joined Chelsea on a seven-year contract with an additional year option.
The dissatisfaction among fans stems from the fact that Strasbourg is co-owned by BlueCo, which also owns Chelsea. On X, one fan remarked: “They bought him for €16 million in 2023/24, played him for just 25 minutes across three games, and now they’re selling him for €21 million, making a €13 million profit for the 2024/25 season. What’s going on?”
Another fan criticized the lack of regulation, saying: “When will regulators properly oversee these financial maneuvers? They seem reluctant to challenge the major clubs but are quick to sanction the smaller ones.”
A third fan simply commented: “If Chelsea gets away with this, then the game is lost.”
Another fan humorously noted: “This situation definitely needs scrutiny. It feels like there’s a Gus Fring-type character somewhere in a lab in New Mexico, plotting behind the scenes.”
During the 2023-2024 season, Washington mainly featured for Chelsea’s U21 team, where he scored six goals in 11 matches.
Additionally, Raheem Sterling, who appears to have fallen out of favor with Maresca, might be on the move, with a potential transfer to Arsenal being discussed for deadline day.
