Sofyan Amrabat given Man United shirt number Raphael Varane was ‘blocked’ from taking

Sofyan Amrabat has been given the shirt number that Raphael Varane was blocked from taking.

On transfer deadline day, Moroccan international Amrabat secured a loan move to Manchester United from Fiorentina, a Serie A team.

United had been pursuing the midfielder for most of the summer transfer window but had to navigate financial fair play regulations. Consequently, they only succeeded in arranging a loan deal towards the end of the window.

It was confirmed on Tuesday afternoon that Amrabat will wear the No. 4 shirt during his time at Old Trafford.

This shirt number was reportedly sought by Varane when he joined United from Real Madrid, but he was unable to get it as Phil Jones held it. According to the Manchester Evening News, Varane had requested the No. 4 but was unable to secure it from Jones, so he settled for No. 19, which he has worn since.

The 27-year-old Amrabat expressed his excitement about joining the club, stating: “It is a huge honor to become a Manchester United player. I’ve had to be patient for this moment but I’m someone who always listens to my heart and now I am representing the club of my dreams. I am a passionate player; I want to bring that energy to the squad, and I will give my all in every action I take for the team.”

He added: “I know exactly how Erik ten Hag likes to work and what he needs from his players. His coaching and guidance greatly developed me earlier in my career. I am confident he will help me maximize my abilities and contribute to the team’s success this season.”

Amrabat may make his debut for United against Brighton and Hove Albion after the international break.
