Liverpool ‘tried to sign huge name this summer’ in shock transfer that would have shaken the Premier League

Liverpool reportedly tried to make a massive signing this summer that would have shocked the Premier League.

During the 2024 summer transfer window, the Reds were relatively inactive, adding only two players to bolster Arne Slot’s squad in his first season as manager. Liverpool missed out on Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi early on but acquired Giorgi Mamardashvili and Federico Chiesa, with Mamardashvili being immediately loaned back to his previous club.

A recent report reveals that Liverpool attempted to make another significant signing before the transfer window closed on August 30. According to Corriere dello Sport, Liverpool considered pursuing Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, who received several deadline-day offers this summer.

Saudi Pro League club Al Ahli had a bid for Osimhen accepted by Napoli, reportedly worth £67.3m plus add-ons, but failed to finalize terms with the player, leading them to sign Brentford striker Ivan Toney instead. Chelsea also showed interest in Osimhen but couldn’t agree on terms with either him or Napoli before the window shut.

The report indicates that Liverpool also explored a late move for the 25-year-old striker but decided against making a formal offer due to financial concerns. Napoli was firm about not accepting anything less than a permanent transfer, and Osimhen was unwilling to accept a pay cut to facilitate the move, making a deal with Liverpool unfeasible.

Despite missing out on a major signing like Osimhen, Slot’s tenure with Liverpool has been flawless so far. He has guided the team to three consecutive Premier League victories, with no goals conceded.

In their latest match, the Reds secured a 3-0 win over their longstanding rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford, just before the first international break of the season.

After the game, Slot told Sky Sports: “United came out very aggressive, and we had to push through that phase. However, playing at Old Trafford always means facing challenging moments.”
