Man Utd flop axed by Erik ten Hag last year after training ground bust-up terminates contract with new club

A Manchester United flop that fell out of favour with Erik ten Hag has had the contract signed with his new club terminated a year after joining.

Since Erik ten Hag became United manager in April 2022, he has overseen the departure of several key players from the club.

The most notable exit was Cristiano Ronaldo, who left Old Trafford in a dramatic fashion after falling out with the Dutch manager just 15 months after rejoining the club.

While Ronaldo found success with Al Nassr in the Saudi Pro League, it has now come to light that another player dismissed by Ten Hag has also been let go by his new team.

Alex Telles, who joined Ronaldo at Al Nassr in July of last year, had his contract terminated by mutual consent. Al Nassr acquired Telles for £4 million and offered him a contract reportedly worth £7 million annually.

Despite making 38 appearances for the Saudi side, Telles’ contract was ended after just over a year, as manager Luis Castro apparently did not include him in his long-term plans.

The termination of Telles’ contract makes him a free agent, allowing him to negotiate with any interested clubs, and several are said to be considering signing him.

At United, Telles struggled to secure a regular spot, making only 50 first-team appearances during his three years at Old Trafford.

In his final season, the left-back was loaned to La Liga side Sevilla, where he made 38 appearances during the 2022/23 season, helping them win the Europa League.

Ten Hag’s dissatisfaction with Telles was compounded by a reported altercation with teammate Hannibal Mejbri, which was said to be the final issue leading to his departure from the club. Telles left Manchester United three years after joining from Porto for £13.6 million.

After his sale, Manchester United issued a statement on their website, saying: “We’d like to thank Alex for his contributions to the club over the last three years and wish him all the best for the future.”
