The news that Liverpool has received on Martin Zubimendi is quite remarkable.

Liverpoolโ€™s interest in Martin Zubimendi is thought to remain despite the Spanish internationalโ€™s u-turn in negotiations this summer.

Despite initially showing interest in moving to Liverpool, the Real Sociedad star chose to remain in San Sebastiรกn. David Ornstein noted that Liverpool decided against seeking an alternative signing and might revisit the option in the future, similar to their patient approach with Virgil van Dijk in 2018. “They pursued Martin Zubimendi and made significant progress, but ultimately he opted to stay at Real Sociedad,” Ornstein mentioned on The Athletic FC podcast, as reported by CaughtOffside.

Ornstein suggested that Liverpool should avoid rushing into a replacement that might not be ideal. Instead, they might want to rely on their current options until a better opportunity arises. He mentioned that Zubimendi could potentially be a target in the future, similar to how they eventually signed Virgil van Dijk after initially missing out on him. Alternatively, Liverpool might look at other options or find success with their current squad, including Ryan Gravenberch. Liverpool has had a strong start to the 2024/25 season with three consecutive Premier League wins. It remains to be seen if they will pursue Zubimendi in the January transfer window.

Itโ€™s hard to anticipate significant changes in the situation over the next few months. San Sebastiรกnโ€™s great food and stunning views will still be there when the winter transfer window opens. By then, the only change will be the remaining length of Zubimendiโ€™s contract, which will be two and a half years. While it’s not impossible for the 25-year-old to reconsider his position, such a scenario seems unlikely. In the meantime, Liverpool fans are enjoying Ryan Gravenberchโ€™s excellent performances as the central midfielder in Slotโ€™s lineup.
