Fabrizio Romano drops Martin Zubimendi bombshell after Liverpool’s failed attempt to sign him in summer window

Fabrizio Romano has provided a surprise update about the future of Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi.

Zubimendi was frequently rumored to be moving to Liverpool during the transfer window, with the Merseyside club identifying him as a top summer target. Despite reportedly indicating his desire to join Liverpool, he chose to remain with his boyhood club.

Romano has now shared an update on the midfielder’s future. Speaking to Anything Liverpool, he mentioned, “I wouldn’t be surprised if Liverpool makes another attempt for Zubimendi in the future.”

Although Zubimendi opted against joining Liverpool, there were suggestions that Real Sociedad might offer him a new contract, but it appears no new terms have been proposed yet.

Real Sociedad have only won one of their first four La Liga matches, with their next game after the international break being against the reigning champions, Real Madrid.

Liverpool, on the other hand, remain unbeaten this season, having scored seven goals and conceded none in their three matches. Despite Ryan Gravenberch’s strong performance in the number six role, Liverpool still considers adding a new player for that position a priority.

Romano is not alone in believing that Liverpool might pursue Zubimendi again when the transfer window reopens on January 1, 2025.

Speaking to the Anfield Agenda YouTube channel, David Lynch commented: “I don’t think the possibility is entirely closed. Liverpool will still be interested in acquiring a number 6 and may look to replace Endo with someone who better fits their needs. They have a very focused list of targets, and Zubimendi meets many of their criteria. It’s possible that Liverpool could revisit this option in January, so it’s worth keeping an eye on.”

After missing out on Zubimendi, Liverpool intensified their search for other targets, signing Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili and Federico Chiesa. Mamardashvili was immediately loaned back to his former club, Valencia.
