Liverpool are reportedly interested in making a shock move for a former Manchester United player.
Liverpool had a relatively quiet transfer window this summer, with their only new addition being Italian winger Federico Chiesa from Juventus. They have also secured a future deal for Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who will join Anfield at the end of the current season.
Looking ahead to January, Liverpool might target a former Manchester United player. According to The Sun, Liverpool is one of four clubs interested in Lille midfielder Angel Gomes. The 24-year-old recently earned a call-up to the England squad under interim manager Lee Carsley.
The report mentions that Newcastle United have prioritized Gomes, but Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, and Borussia Dortmund are also in the mix. Gomes could be available on a free transfer at the end of the season as his contract is set to expire.
Gomes has received praise from Carsley following his recent appearances for England. Carsley noted Gomes’ deep passion for football, his tactical awareness, and his extensive knowledge of players across various leagues.
Carsley also remarked, “He frequently shares insights about build-ups from other clubs or his experiences playing against different teams in France, which gives him a unique perspective.”
Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane commented on ITV, “Gomes is always available and offers great options. It might be a bit of a dilemma for him.”
Arsenal legend Ian Wright added, “Angel Gomes is frequently compared to players like Jack Grealish and Trent Alexander-Arnold. Watching Gomes in midfield, always moving and with a great touch, demonstrates his constant availability and the excellent options he provides. This could present a challenge for him.”
