Gary Neville takes dig at Liverpool following first defeat of the Arne Slot era

Gary Neville has taken a brutal swipe at Liverpool after their shock loss to Nottingham Forest at Anfield.

Liverpool began the 2024/25 Premier League season in stellar form, securing three consecutive wins with clean sheets, including a strong victory over their traditional rivals, Manchester United. However, their perfect streak was abruptly halted on Saturday when they unexpectedly lost 1-0 to Nottingham Forest at home.

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville quickly took to social media to mock Liverpool’s defeat. On Instagram, Neville posted: “Well… what a football weekend! United win, Salford win & the big one Liverpool LOSE! Oh dear, beautiful weekend!”

Earlier that day, Neville’s former team, Manchester United, bounced back from their previous loss to Liverpool by defeating Southampton 3-0 at St Mary’s Stadium. United’s goalkeeper Andre Onana saved an early penalty, and summer signing Matthijs de Ligt scored the opener. Goals from Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho secured the victory, marking their second win of the season.

Later, Salford City, co-owned by Neville and other former United players, also earned their second win of the season by overcoming Cheltenham Town 2-1, despite initially falling behind to a goal from Ethon Archer.

Despite falling behind, Neville’s League Two team, Salford City, rallied with Hakeem Adelakun scoring an equalizer in the 60th minute, then netting the winning goal in the 86th minute.

Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest’s winger Callum Hudson-Odoi scored to extend his team’s unbeaten streak to four games and hand Liverpool their first defeat under new manager Arne Slot.

After the match, Slot criticized his team’s performance, stating: “It wasn’t good enough today because too many individual performances in ball possession were below the standards I expect from these players.”
