Raphael Varane ready to terminate Como contract and retire from football

New reports suggest that iconic defender Raphael Varane is preparing to terminate his contract with new club Como and hang up the boots for good.

Raphaël Varane is reportedly preparing to retire from football and terminate his contract with newly-promoted Serie A side Como. After a distinguished 14-year career, during which he won four Champions League titles, three La Liga titles with Real Madrid, the EFL and FA Cups with Manchester United, and the 2018 World Cup with France, the 31-year-old is facing challenges following a serious knee injury he sustained just 20 minutes into his debut for Como.

According to French outlet Le Parisien, Varane is expected to announce his early retirement due to ongoing fitness struggles and previous long-term injuries. This was later confirmed by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who stated that Varane is considering retirement following his recent setback.

Varane’s time at Manchester United was marred by injuries, causing him to miss over 40 matches, and he missed nearly 100 games during his decade at Real Madrid due to injury or illness. Despite these challenges, he has had an illustrious career and is regarded as one of the most successful French players in football history. He previously announced his international retirement after France’s loss to Argentina in the 2022 World Cup final, expressing immense pride in representing his country.

“I’ve been contemplating this for several months and have decided that it’s the right time for me to retire internationally.”
