Arne Slot sets seriously impressive Liverpool record which may never be matched with Bologna win

Liverpool manager Arne Slot made a special piece of history on Wednesday night as his side made the perfect start to their latest Champions League campaign.

Replacing Jürgen Klopp was always going to be a daunting task. The German coach transformed a struggling team into a European powerhouse, creating a strong bond with his players along the way.

When he announced he would step down at the end of the 2023/24 season, many worried about who could fill his shoes. Concerns grew when Liverpool chose to appoint Arne Slot from Feyenoord, a decision driven by sporting director Richard Hughes, who relied on a detailed, data-focused approach.

Hughes remarked, “The philosophy and playing style that attracted us to Arne is subjective, rooted in football opinion and data. His Feyenoord team excelled across all metrics.”

Three months later, things are looking bright at Anfield.

After securing five wins out of six in the league, Slot’s team achieved a solid 2-0 victory against Bologna in their Champions League opener. Alexis Mac Allister opened the scoring with a precise finish from a Mohamed Salah cross, and Salah later sealed the win with a classic strike.

With this latest success, Arne Slot has made history as the first Liverpool manager to win eight of his first nine games.

Ahead of Wednesday night’s match, Slot reflected on the legacy Jürgen Klopp left at Anfield.

He said, “The culture of this team and club, the commitment to hard work, and the players’ dedication during training are all impressive. Typically, when joining a new club, establishing that culture can be challenging, but that wasn’t necessary here.”

Slot acknowledged, “I inherited a lot of quality, but more importantly, I took over a team and a club that was already committed to hard work and maximizing their potential every day.”

He added, “I wouldn’t say I was surprised by this, but it was reassuring to see that what Jürgen told me about the culture was true; I felt it from the very beginning.”
