Leeds United is still waiting for £35.7 million from Barcelona for the transfer of Raphinha, which took place over two years ago, according to a recent report from Sport. On October 8, the Spanish outlet noted that Raphinha is one of four players signed by Barcelona in 2022 for whom significant payments remain due, alongside Ferran Torres, Robert Lewandowski, and Jules Kounde.

When Raphinha departed Elland Road, a total fee of £55 million was agreed upon during Andrea Radrizzani’s management, with £50 million expected to be paid upfront by the La Liga club. However, Sport now reports that Leeds is owed £469,000 in the short term and a total of £35.2 million in the long term, along with payments owed to Raphinha’s previous clubs: Sporting CP, Rennes, and Vitoria de Guimaraes.

This ongoing financial uncertainty is likely to frustrate Leeds fans, who anticipated a significant boost from Raphinha’s transfer. Marketed as the largest deal involving Elland Road in the summer of 2022, it was expected to allow then-manager Jesse Marsch to invest heavily in replacements. However, concerns have arisen regarding the deal’s structure, as it was initially believed that Barcelona would pay most of the fee upfront, which now seems not to be the case.

It remains unclear whether Barcelona is struggling financially to make the initial payment or if the terms set by Radrizzani and Angus Kinnear were weaker than expected. Leeds supporters are understandably upset about the £35 million shortfall, especially given that Raphinha, a key player at the time, may have been sold for less than his actual market value.

Additionally, it is anticipated that 49ers Enterprises will cover the outstanding payments owed by Barcelona. With Archie Gray recently sold for a significant amount to address profit and sustainability issues, fans and ownership are likely pondering what might have been had Barcelona fulfilled its financial obligations.

In other Leeds news, Daniel Farke has received good news as one loan player will stay at Thorp Arch during the international break.
