Barcelona Sporting Director Eyes Chelsea Talents

Barcelona’s summer transfer activity saw them acquire Dani Olmo and Pau Victor, but financial limitations significantly shaped their approach. Initially focused on bringing in a midfielder, the club had to adjust their strategy after manager Hansi Flick weighed in.

Flick has shown confidence in the current depth of the midfield, despite earlier talks about needing reinforcements. Although Barcelona made efforts to sign Mikel Merino and Amadou Onana, they now feel secure with Marc Casado, Andreas Christensen, Eric Garcia, and the anticipated return of Marc Bernal next year.

Meanwhile, Sporting Director Deco is looking into economic loan options for January, particularly from Chelsea, which has a surplus of talent. One player under consideration is Carney Chukwuemeka, who is available for loan.

Another potential target is Romeo Lavia, whom Deco pursued two summers ago when he was at Southampton. After a bidding war with Liverpool and Chelsea, Lavia signed with the Blues for €60 million. However, due to a serious injury last year, he has struggled to earn a starting spot this season, making him another viable loan candidate.

Currently, it appears Barcelona will not actively seek a midfielder. Still, with injuries on the rise, Flick needs to ensure adequate coverage in that area. Losing Casado would be a significant setback, as neither Christensen nor Garcia naturally fit that role, and Frenkie de Jong has yet to prove himself consistently as a deep-lying midfielder.
