Arsenal is reportedly making significant efforts to strengthen their squad to match the quality and depth of title rivals Manchester City, especially by looking for a replacement for Bukayo Saka.
Mick Brown, a former chief scout for Manchester United, told Football Insider that Arsenal is likely preparing for the January transfer window to enhance their wide options, enabling them to give Saka occasional rest.
Saka has been crucial for Arsenal in recent seasons, but there’s a lack of adequate cover or competition for the young England international. Raheem Sterling, a loan signing, has yet to make a significant impact since joining the club.
This issue has persisted for a while, given Saka’s heavy playing load at a young age. Manager Mikel Arteta could benefit from allowing the 23-year-old some much-needed breaks without significantly affecting team performance.
Regarding Arsenal’s plans for January, Brown noted: “Yes, they’ll be looking to strengthen their depth.
“If I were to put on my chief scout’s hat – with a strong team like Arsenal’s, you must always plan for potential injuries.
“I’m confident Arsenal is currently preparing for a situation where someone like Saka could get injured.
“They’ve made excellent strides to reach a competitive level with Manchester City, but I don’t believe they have the same depth at this moment.
“City can rotate players without a noticeable decline in quality – Arsenal hasn’t reached that point yet.
“However, they are diligently working behind the scenes to achieve that level.”
