Liverpool have experienced several injury setbacks this season, but Caoimhin Kelleher’s dependable performances in Alisson Becker’s absence have helped alleviate some of the concerns.
After Liverpool’s recent victory over Aston Villa, manager Arne Slot spoke about his goalkeepers, reaffirming Alisson’s status as the team’s first-choice: “First and foremost, Alisson needs to regain full fitness, and it’s always been clear that when he’s healthy, he will be our number one. Until then, Caoimhin [Kelleher] has been outstanding, both last season and this one. But once Alisson is fit again, he’ll resume his role as our first-choice goalkeeper.”
While Alisson’s injury is expected to keep him sidelined until after the international break, his return timeline remains uncertain. In the meantime, Kelleher’s performance against Aston Villa highlighted his capabilities, and his continued form has made the absence of their top-tier Brazilian keeper less noticeable.
Kelleher’s strong displays this season have prompted speculation not only about his current form but also his future at the club. At 25, he has proven his talent, but it’s unlikely he will permanently replace Alisson, which could be frustrating for a keeper of his caliber. Though Liverpool may have one of the world’s best backup goalkeepers in Kelleher, he may eventually look for a move where he can secure a starting spot.
