Rayan Cherki Set to Stay at Lyon Despite Interest from Liverpool and Dortmund
Liverpool have been monitoring Rayan Cherki throughout the January transfer window, but the Lyon playmaker now appears likely to remain with the club, despite interest from multiple teams.
Last week, CaughtOffside reported that Liverpool had made an enquiry about the 21-year-old, as his representatives explored potential moves due to Lyon’s financial struggles.
Lyon Reject Dortmund’s Bid
On Monday, Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg revealed that Borussia Dortmund had made a €22.5 million bid for Cherki. However, Lyon rejected the offer and are unwilling to continue negotiations.
Plettenberg provided further details, stating:
“Lyon still do not want to let Rayan Cherki go. The deal is very complicated. OL officials have confirmed to Sky that multiple offers from Dortmund have been turned down, and the club considers them ‘too late’ in the window.”
Despite Dortmund’s persistence, it now seems highly unlikely that Cherki will leave Lyon this January, meaning both Liverpool and BVB may have to revisit their interest in the summer.
Could Liverpool Sign Rayan Cherki in the Summer?
Borussia Dortmund have been the more active club in their pursuit of Rayan Cherki, but their €22.5 million (£18.7m) bid was rejected by Lyon, signaling the French club’s reluctance to part with their playmaker.
While Liverpool haven’t made a serious push for Cherki in the final hours of the January transfer window, a summer move remains possible. Anfield officials seemingly acknowledged that prying him away mid-season would be difficult, especially with Lyon fighting for a European place despite their ongoing financial struggles.
Cherki has contributed five goals and nine assists in 26 appearances this season, proving his value as both a winger and an attacking midfielder under Paulo Fonseca. With Dortmund’s late efforts failing, Liverpool now have several months to monitor his performances before deciding whether to make their own move when the window reopens.
