Barcelona sporting director Deco has reportedly dismissed the possibility of signing Joshua Kimmich or Virgil van Dijk this summer.
According to Diario Sport, both players were offered to Barcelona as they approach the end of their current contracts. However, Deco firmly declined the opportunity.
Barcelona has been linked with Kimmich for some time, but Deco believes the squad is already well-equipped, especially in midfield. With players like Marc Casado, Marc Bernal, Gavi, Pedri, and Frenkie de Jong in the ranks, he sees no urgent need for further reinforcements in that area.
Deco’s stance is the same regarding Virgil van Dijk. Barcelona already have a strong defensive lineup featuring Pau Cubarsí, Ronald Araújo, Íñigo Martínez, Eric García, and Andreas Christensen. Additionally, the club is expected to sign Jonathan Tah as a free agent.
Age is also a key factor in Deco’s decision-making. Kimmich recently turned 30, while Van Dijk will be 34 this summer, making long-term investments in them less appealing.
As things stand, both players seem likely to remain at their current clubs. Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund recently stated that contract talks with Kimmich are progressing, while Van Dijk is reportedly set to extend his stay at Liverpool.
