Salah hesitant to depart from Liverpool despite his contract expiring

Mohamed Salah, Liverpool’s standout player, has expressed his desire to extend his time at Anfield beyond the end of the 2024-25 season. At 32, Salah is enjoying a remarkable start to the new season under manager Arne Slot, who succeeded Jurgen Klopp in May.

Salah has been crucial this season, scoring three goals and providing three assists in just three Premier League games. His recent performance included a goal at Manchester United’s Old Trafford, contributing to Liverpool’s 3-0 win over their long-time rivals. This goal marked his seventh consecutive match at Old Trafford where he has scored.

Since joining Liverpool from Roma in the summer of 2017, Salah has made 352 appearances and netted 214 goals. Although his current contract is nearing its end, Salah is keen to remain at Liverpool for a ninth season as Slot begins his tenure.

According to the Liverpool Echo, Salah is prioritizing negotiations for a new contract with Liverpool, who are currently second in the Premier League, trailing Manchester City only on goal difference. Salah’s interest in staying may be partly driven by a desire to avoid the decline faced by former teammate Sadio Mane, now at Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, where Mane’s reputation has diminished compared to when he was in Europe.

With Salah entering the final year of his contract, there are concerns about his future at Liverpool. Although Salah wants to stay, formal contract discussions have yet to start. In support, teammate Luis Diaz, who benefited from Salah’s two assists in the recent match, has publicly encouraged him to stay.

Salah is not the only key player with an expiring contract, as Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold also have deals that will end in the summer of 2025, adding to the uncertainty about Liverpool’s squad future.
