Arne Slot issues blunt response after Liverpool player demanded to leave the club during the international break

Arne Slot has offered a blunt response to a Liverpool player who suggested he wanted to leave the club while on international break.

Since taking over from the renowned manager Jurgen Klopp this summer, Slot has gained popularity among Liverpool fans for his candidness.

In just a few months, the Dutchman has attracted attention for his straightforward comments on Liverpool’s interest in Martin Zubimendi and his frank analysis of Erik ten Hag’s tactics after a 3-0 victory over Manchester United.

Recently, Slot delivered another blunt reply concerning a Liverpool player who hinted at wanting to leave the club soon.

While on international duty with the Republic of Ireland, goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher mentioned to the media his desire to find a new club where he could be the starting goalkeeper.

In response to Kelleher’s remarks before the upcoming match against Nottingham Forest, Slot commented: “Kelleher wants to leave? I’d be more concerned if a player said they were happy sitting on the bench and wanted to stay there forever!”

Kelleher’s comments came during a press conference before Ireland’s 2-0 defeat to Greece on Tuesday. The 25-year-old stated: “I’ve made it clear over the past few years that I want to move to a place where I can be the number one. The club’s decision to bring in a new goalkeeper (Mamardashvili) seems to indicate they’re heading in a different direction.”

Liverpool has turned down multiple offers for Kelleher. The decision isn’t entirely in his hands. He has expressed a clear ambition to play regularly, believing he is capable of it.

During the last summer transfer window, several clubs showed interest in Kelleher, including Nottingham Forest, which made a £7 million bid plus American goalkeeper Matt Turner that was rejected.

Liverpool chose to retain Kelleher, but with the signing of Giorgi Mamardashvili and his return from a loan at Valencia at the end of the season, it seems likely that Kelleher might seek a move.
