What Fabrizio Romano heard from Liverpool about Zubimendi after reports he regrets staying at Sociedad

The terrific form of Ryan Gravenberch in the No.6 position means most Liverpool fans will hardly be yearning for past links to Martin Zubimendi.

The Dutch player has surprisingly secured a consistent role under new manager Arne Slot this season. Currently, both Liverpool and the linked Spanish international seem satisfied with the current arrangement, according to Fabrizio Romano’s update.

Romano stated, “No, it’s completely over at this moment. There’s nothing ongoing right now, and I don’t expect any developments in the coming days or weeks, particularly before the January transfer window. If Zubimendi had wanted to join Liverpool, he had the chance, as the club was ready to meet his release clause and even discussed including players in the deal with Real Sociedad. However, he chose to stay.”

He added that there are no signs from Liverpool indicating that Zubimendi will change his mind or negotiate with Real Sociedad for a transfer in January. While Liverpool appreciates Zubimendi, this doesn’t mean they will pursue him again in January; a decision may be revisited in the summer.

As for Liverpool’s interest in a holding midfielder, it remains a possibility, but their immediate focus appears to be elsewhere.

According to a report from Football Insider, sporting director Richard Hughes remains focused on securing a new holding midfielder for Liverpool in the upcoming transfer window. However, it’s still uncertain whether the club will strengthen their midfield.

Adding depth in January wouldn’t be unwelcome, especially given the current lack of reliable options. Tyler Morton, who chose to stay despite interest from Bayer Leverkusen, has the potential to contribute, but there are valid concerns regarding Wataru Endo based on his pre-season performances.

Meanwhile, promising talent Stefan Bajectic has been sent to Austria to continue his development under Pep Lijnders, Jurgen Klopp’s former assistant.
