Alan Shearer tells Gary Lineker ‘rumour’ he’s heard about Pep Guardiola and the England job

Alan Shearer revealed what he has told about the prospect of Pep Guardiola succeeding Gareth Southgate as England manager during the latest episode of The Rest Is Football with Gary Lineker.

Southgate resigned from his position after the Three Lions experienced a tough loss at Euro 2024, falling to Spain in the final due to a late winner from Mikel Oyarzabal. Since then, Lee Carsley has assumed the role on an interim basis, with the responsibility of leading the team through the upcoming Nations League matches in the autumn.

Many prominent names have been suggested for the current vacancy, including Eddie Howe, Graham Potter, and Mauricio Pochettino. However, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola remains a frequently mentioned candidate. Lineker believes that England would be prepared to wait for Guardiola if he chooses to end his tenure at the Etihad Stadium.

Lineker mentioned on The Rest Is Football podcast, “I saw an interview a few days ago with Pep Guardiola where he was asked in a press conference if he would be interested in the England job.”

Lineker continued, “People generally dismissed it, but he didn’t. The way he spoke made me think he might actually be interested in the role. Given that Carsley has been appointed as interim coach and Pep’s contract expires at the end of the season, I might be indulging in a bit of wishful thinking!”

Alan Shearer, another panellist, concurred, suggesting that he believes the FA will be patient in their search for the right candidate for the position.

The former Newcastle forward said, “A few people have mentioned it to me, but I’m not sure if it’s just a rumor. However, it’s wise for them to give the role to Carsley and take their time to see how things unfold.”

“Considering they have a game in less than a month, appointing someone in such a short timeframe would have been quite challenging.

Guardiola has fueled speculation about leaving Manchester City and was recently asked at a press conference if he’s interested in exploring new opportunities.

“I need to decide what I want to do with my life,” he stated.

“This includes whether I want to stay here, take a break, coach national teams, or pursue other options.”
